Where boys can be boys

This picture pretty much sums up Harrison's vacation. He was a boy doing boy things...and we let him. He was filthy every moment of every day...and we let him. He gathered rocks and threw them in the river...and we let him. He hiked and climbed over rocks...and we let him.

Preparing for this trip, we said the word "mountains" quite often. Harrison caught on and said delightedly, "we're going to the MOUNTAINS!" over and over again. He had never seen mountains before. We hadn't really discussed what all "mountains" meant, but that didn't stop his excitement about going there. And as my dad pointed out, boys just know. And boy did he!

One day we hiked up to some waterfalls. One and half miles up, which means one and a half miles back down. And Harrison did it. On his own. With very minimal complaining. He was hot and tired and dirty and sweaty...and he loved it! It was really fun to watch my oldest boy do what he does best: Be a boy. And to be a boy without having us tell him to slow down, quiet down, or "behave" in the confined ways we sometimes expect of him.

So, perhaps more than summing up Harrison's mountain experience, this picture really captures the feeling I got watching him live out who God made him to be.
