You're doing what?!

Last week The DeerTales Clan shed all ties to modern society and headed to the mountains. No watch, no cell phone, no electricity, no showers, no flushing toilets. I know to many of you, this sounds like a trip nightmares are made of. But for us, this was an incredibly wonderful adventure, an unparalelled time of connection, and a fountain head of sweet memories. As we prepared for this trip, I can't tell you how many people said, "You're taking all four kids camping? In a tent? For fun?" Yes, yes, and yes we would answer with smiles. They would just nod with a glazed look on their faces that read "You guys are CRAZY!" That may well be true, but oh, this was an amazing trip. Here's how it started: We began our trip by staying one night at Curt Gowdy State Park. While we enjoyed our time here, it was really just a scheduled stop on the route to our "real" destination. We had a campfire, then we settled in for the night in our small tent. Yes, we took two tents. I'll write more on that in another post! When you don't have a watch, you tend to just get up when the sun and the kids wake you. After a trip to the restrooms (non-flushing is just a nice way to say fancy outhouse!), we started to load the van...at which time we saw it was not even 7am! Those of you who know me will be surprised to learn that I didn't even freak out about this! We were up and at 'em, the sky was amazing, the morning breeze was crisp and cool, so what did I have to complain about?!

It was a blessing to watch the children enjoying God's creation. To watch them quietly appreciating the beauty around them. More on that later! Check back, there will be more!
