Halloween has never a huge deal at our house. We've always managed to come up with some costumes and make it to a few houses to trick or treat. But honestly, if it wasn't for my grandma and sister coming up with costumes several years, we might have just stayed home with the light out.
The Halloweens of 2013 and 2014 we hit an all-time low.
In 2013 we had NO COSTUMES. So the kids dug through their dress-up clothes to come up with this:
Ballerina with old recital costume, Candy Corn costume Amana wore as a toddler, a waitress, Jeremey Wade from River Monsters (the only creative costume that year), and a football player. These were all put together from junk around the house.
In 2014, we really had no costumes. On Halloween day, Lige and I bought a costume make-up kit for less than four dollars and came up with this:
Van Helsing-vampire hunter, Skeleton Pirate with old costume, Zombie Girl, and Kittie Cat Cheerleader.
And a Sugar Skull Ballerina.
For 2 hours and a make-up kit, we didn't do to bad.
Then comes 2015. In September my grandma sent me home from Omaha with a goodie bag from Goodwill. There were some black, faux-velvet dresses and some long, flowery skirts. I was inspired. I also started remembering how much time my mom had put into creating MY costumes as a child, and I was suddenly feeling like a slacker mom. With my Goodwill inspiration, a month till Halloween, and my kids' creativity, I set out to make Halloween 2015 Spook-tacular!
Harrison was Jack Skellington from "The Nightmare Before Christmas." I got the pants and black denim jacket at a thrift store for $4. I cut and sewed and tailored them to fit him better. I made the bat bow time with felt from home. My sister splurged and bought him skeleton gloves. Face paint and we were done!
Anlynn was the hag witch from Snow White. I used those faux-velvet dresses to create a hooded cape and dress. I got the basket for $1.35 and the apple for about $2. My sister to the rescue again, bought the $3 witch's nose to complete the look.
Isaac really wanted to be a mummy. He has been fascinated by all things Ancient Egypt since we studied it last year in school. I probably spent the most on his costume. Bought the pants and shirt and white fabric. Stained with with tea to look older, sewed and glued the fabric strips on and around. My sister finished the look with creepy bugs. Isaac LOVED those silly bugs!
Amana was a gypsy, inspired from the flowery skirt from Goodwill. I purchased a flowy shirt from Goodwill that we altered into a more gypsy silhouette. We completely the look with a head scarf, bangled hip scarf, coin jewelry (from Aunt Sandy) and a whole lot of make-up!
Lucy was the Queen of Hearts. My grandma mailed me red and white tulle from her stash. I spent $1 on a deck of cards for belt and collar. We also splurged on red hair spray. I made red hearts from felt and glitter we had at home. Aunt Sandy supplied the crown and flowers (which I painted red...ha!)
This was such a fun project for me to work on. I love that I had a month and didn't procrastinate! I love that my kids totally loved their finished looks. Tensions were high as we completed make-up and final details in the few hours before heading out to Trick or Treat, but I think we'd all say it was worth it!
Happy Halloween 2015
