We have been keeping busy this winter . We've had our normal stuff like AWANA, wrestling, dance, and youth group. In addition to that stuff, Lige has preached twice, helped perform a funeral, and traveled out of town several times for meetings. There was a time in my earlier mothering that all that would have added up to one overwhelmed and stir-crazy mama! Now, thankfully, I've matured a bit, planned a bit, and the kids are older. We've tossed some fun into our winter doldrums. :)
School has gone very well this year. I'm so pleased with our curriculum choices, especially our history. The internet makes it so easy to supplement our curriculum with fun activities and engaging videos. Today we spent some time learning about Claude Monet and the Impressionists. Then we whipped out the watercolors to replicate our own versions of Monet's "Japanese Bridge". All the kids did great, but I have to admit I was most impressed with Harrison's final project. He worked slowly and carefully, fully embracing the Impressionist philosophy. It is so fun to see a new side of your child open up!
Instead of my usual "go find something to do" when the kids complain of boredom, I'm trying to help them find a creative or active outlet. Anlynn was struggling the other day after I told her she could not watch another episode of "Cupcake Wars" on Netflix. What's better that watching bakers? BEING the baker! We made a grocery list, went shopping, then came home and made a gluten free carrot cake with homemade cream cheese frosting. It was delicious, by the way!
In other news...
Lucy is finally making progress in the whole potty training thing. We don't have complete success yet, but we are getting there. After 12 nearly-consecutive years of buying diapers, the idea of NOT having to buy diapers is making us flat out gidy! ;)
With all the recent snow followed by 40+ degree days, my kids have been spending a lot of time playing in the snow. Minden doesn't offer a single hill, so sledding is completely out. But that leaves plenty of room for building snowmen, making forts, and digging tunnels in the deep mountains of snow left from plowing our driveway. They have spent hours out there. They are old enough to go out alone. Which means I get to spend HOURS inside my own house ALONE. Let me tell you, that is a real treat! I get a lot done and still have time to appreciate the work I did before someone comes through and messes it up again!
As a normal part of our homeschool day, we have Together Time. This is where I can cover several subjects with all the kids at once doing multi-grade teaching. It saves me time, and we all just love it. We have our Bible time, History, Writing, and then I read aloud to the kids. The last book we finished was "How to Eat Fried Worms". To celebrate the conclusion of the book, we made ourselves a wormy snack:
So, anyway, that's how we've been keeping busy so far this winter. We have some wrestling tournaments coming up and a visit from my mom, so we'll keep the fun going for sure! How are you keeping busy during the cold (and some not-so-cold) days?
