Starting School 2016/2017

While Minden Public School is getting ready to start tomorrow, we over at Top Two Academy decided to start this past Monday.  I had everything ready to go anyway, so why not?!

We started our first day with some annual First Day of School pictures.  It was a perfect morning for photos, even if the kids are squinting in some of them.

This year we have:
Amana in 8th grade (8th?!  Wait, what?!)

Anlynn in 6th grade

Harrison in 4th grade

Isaac in...shall we say First and a half? Yes,we shall.

And Lucy is joining us more this year for some Preschool.  But don't tell HER that it's preschool.  According to her, she is in KINDERGARTEN! (or phonetically the way she actually says it: TinderDarden...we're working on it.)

We are keeping the same flow from last year.  We really enjoy starting our day with what we call Together Time.  This is where we all work together, old "one room school house" style.  We write in journals, read the Bible, listen to our history text and take notes, do geography map work, do our science unit and interactive notebook, read our read aloud literature book, and work on Language Arts skills.  While we are all doing the same thing at the same time, what is expected of each student is more age appropriate.  For example, Amana is required to take Cornell Notes for history while Anlynn and Harrison just have to jot down a few interesting facts.

After together time is over, we break up for their independent work.  While the 3 big kids are working on math and reading, I take Isaac and Lucy and work through their assignments with them.  They have some really great comprehensive workbooks, and we utilize hands-on learning ideas I steal from Pinterest.

We are off to a good start!  Even when homeschool days are awful (and there are some awful days, to be sure) I really love that we do this.  Even when the burden of our children's education feels very heavy, I still just love it.  I love being with my kids, I love watching them learn, and I love learning with them.  What a special privilege!
(Ask me what a "privilege" it is sometime in December! Ha!)
